UPDATE: Introduction of mandatory trement requirements for all solid wood packaging and dunnage.
As detailed in the AQIS Notice to industry 30/2005-06, AQIS will implement mandatory tretment requirements for solid wood packaging and dunnage on 1 May 2006.
How will AQIS manage the import of containerised timber packaging? Under existing conditions, untreated timber can be inspected and released if quarantine risk material is not detected during inspection. From 1 May 2006, mandatory treatment, either offshore or onshore, is required for all solid wood packaging. The FCL/FCX and LCL Broker Accreditation Schemes will continue as normal.
How will AQIS manage the import of timber packaging for air cargo and break bulk consignments? AQIS is investingating longer term options for managing the quarantine risks associated with the timber packaging. Until these systems have been developed, AQIS will be monitoring air cargo and break bulk packaging via surveillance. If quarantine risks such as insect infestation or bark are identified during routine surveillance, the consgnment will be held whil the packaging is treated to address the risk. Alternatively, the packaging can be removed from the consignment, re-exported or destroyed. All treatments will be conducted at the importers expense.
There is n o requirments to volunteer consignments to AQIS
